Reason is the music software made with one thing in mind: you. And whatever music is on your mind, Reason makes it easier to bring it out. Version 9 brings a faster and easier interface with a whole new look and an even smoother creative flow.
Instruments Synthesizers, drum machines, loop players and samplers. Add, play, tweak, combine and mix as many of each as you can possibly want. Right out of the box, Reason has a rack for instruments. Reason comes with MIDI out support to bring the sound of your favorite hardware synths and beatboxes into the Reason rack.
Reason's synths have been a cornerstone in the application since day one. For a straightforward analog style synth, try out the Subtractor Analog Synth. For a more aggressive digital sound, check out the Malström Wavetable Synthesizer. With its godlike flexibility and divine sound, the Thor Polysonic Synthesizer is a giant of a synth–one for the tweak heads, or simply a beautiful sounding instrument.
Beats and loops
Building on the design from classic drum machines, the Redrum Drum Computer offers traditional pattern programming and a great selection of drum kits. For endless sound sculpting possibilities, the Kong Drum Designer comes with sampled drums, drum synths, physical modeling and built-in effects. If you would rather work with sampled loops in your music, turn to the Dr. Octo Rex Loop Player. This loop player powerhouse makes it a breeze to work with sampled material in your songs.
Samples for playing and tweaking
Reason's huge sound bank comes packed with sampled instruments in every conceivable category. To play samples back, or indeed to sample your own sounds, Reason has two different samplers. The fully featured NN-XT Advanced Sampler lets you play and build rich and complex, multi layered instrument patches, while the straightforward NN-19 Sampler is a quick and easy sampler that comes with plenty of real time modulation capabilities..
Reason also features the ID-8 Instrument Device - a songwriter's best friend. If all you want is a great piano sound or an organ or some strings, the ID-8 is a quick and straightforward way to quickly grab those sounds. The ID-8 is also maps to the General MIDI standard, making it easy to work with imported MIDI files.
Extending your instrument rack
Want even more instruments? With the Rack Extension technology the Reason rack opens up to third party developers too. Propellerhead and leading third party developers offers a great selection of instruments as add-ons to your Reason rack.
All your other synths too!
For all your external MIDI hardware, Reason comes with the aptly named External MIDI Instrument. With this unit, you can play all your MIDI synths, beatboxes and whatnot from Reason's sequencer, and control your external MIDI gear with the full automation that Reason users have come to expect. In Reason you can combine, layer and mix instruments to create anything from lush and evolving aural landscapes to performance friendly instrument setups. Using the Combinator device, you can build your own instrument by combining different synths, samplers and effects to get just the sound you are after.
Hook up the RPG-8 Arpeggiator to any Reason instrument to create arpeggiated melody lines from the chord you are playing. With settings for play mode, note insert and rhythmic pattern, the RPG-8 can conjure up some pretty amazing music.
Mixing in Reason:
Capture your ideas with a minimum of mouse clicks. Immediate and intuitive, Reason's rock solid audio and MIDI sequencer gives you total control. Record, edit, arrange. Capture MIDI performances and automation, record and overdub audio, or draw in notes with the mouse. Whatever suits your workflow, Reason's sequencer is fast, flexible and fun. Any mistakes can easily be corrected, adjusted or quickly spliced together from multiple takes. Keeping with Reason’s famous ease of use, Reason's sequencer still comes with all the editing features you need. If your playing is too tight—use the ReGroove Groove Mixer to add more human feel.
All sequencer data — notes, automation, the works — are housed in clips; musical building blocks that can be opened, sliced or moved. When a clip is moved to a new location, all its internal data follows right along with it, always ending up exactly where you intended it to. Safe, speedy sequencing. In sync with your flow. Forever adapting to you and your working methods. Reason's sequencer simply gets you there faster.
Every thinkable knob, button or fader can be automated with ease, and then edited and fine tuned in the sequencer. Simply draw in your automation — volume curves, filter sweeps, whatever you want! — or press record and every button click, fader move and knob tweak in the rack will be recorded in the sequencer in separate clips.
Sequence your songs using a pattern-based approach. With Blocks, the segments of your song become puzzle pieces, ready to be laid out in your arrangement, looped and rearranged.
Start by creating the discrete parts of your song in blocks mode. When you start building your song, switch to song mode and draw in what blocks should play when in the dedicated pattern lane. Use one block for the verse and one for the chorus — or build your song around a single 8-bar loop.
Blocks provide a very fast way of creating a musical structure for your song. But the options don't end there. With the basic arrangement laid out, you can see the contents of the blocks and create variations and mute individual parts, or add further musical elements on top.
As a perfect performance may be less than perfect from scratch, Reason features a swift and easy to use comp editor. Record multiple takes in loop mode then build the perfect track from the best parts. It's as simple as selecting the parts that work and muting the ones that don't. Exit the comp editor and listen to the results; a perfect take containing only the good parts.
With our now legendary non-destructive time stretch, you can actually record first and pick your tempo later. Reason has a unique twist on the concept of time and tempo. Change the song tempo on the fly and all your audio tracks will follow right along without any need for pre-processing of any kind. Need to slow your song down to nail a tricky passage? No problem. Just reduce the tempo, record your performance and bring the tempo back up. The audio quality? Amazing.
Reason automatically slices recordings and imported audio into single notes or hits. Quantize an audio take. Tweak your timing to perfection, or to drastically change the recording. The sliced up audio can also be converted to REX files for playback and further sound designing treatment in Reason’s Dr. Octo Rex Loop Player, Reason's samplers, or the Kong Drum Designer.
Non-destructively change the pitch of an audio recording with a mouse click. Just select the audio tracks, pitch it up or down a semitone, a whole note or even a whole octave. The choice is yours. All in great-sounding, real-time, of course.
